Saudi Aramco pursues diversification with artificial intelligence center
Saudi's state-owned oil company announced today its plan to support artificial intelligence (AI) research in the kingdom. Aramco signed a memorandum of understanding with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology north of Jeddah to create a new research center for AI at the educational institution. The center will focus on research, development and marketing of AI technologies, the official Saudi Press Agency reported. The center will "provide a joint framework for working with Saudi Aramco in a close way to develop proper and quick solutions for the needs of the energy sector, among other relevant sectors," said university vice president Donal Bradley. Why it matters: Saudi Arabia is seeking to diversify its economy and rely less on oil as per the Vision 2030 initiative. The kingdom has had some success in this regard.

NC A&T joins Duke, other major partners, in $20M Artificial Intelligence Center - UNC System
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is playing a critical role in the creation of Athena, a new artificial intelligence (AI) research center led by Duke University and including Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other prominent institutional partners. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security, Athena is part of a $220 million investment in 11 AI research institutes engaging campuses in 40 states nationwide. Daniel Limbrick, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is the principal investigator for North Carolina A&T's sub-award from Duke University. Limbrick will contribute expertise in microprocessing and autonomous vehicles by creating small-scale testbeds of autonomous vehicle scenarios. The testbeds offer physical platforms to test and research the capabilities and limitations of edge computing and expand the research beyond computational modeling.

AI will be a big part of the DoD's big data effort
Best listening experience is on Chrome, Firefox or Safari. The Defense Department's data strategy released just a few weeks ago says improving data management will help it fight and win wars. It says artificial intelligence will become an important component of data-fueled digital modernization. For an assessment, the CEO of data analysis company Govini, Tara Murphy Dougherty joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin. Insight by BOX: Federal News Network showcases several examples of agencies and industry partnering to create and evolve the future of work in this exclusive ebook.

Alum gives IU $60M for artificial intelligence center
By The Associated Press BLOOMINGTON -- An Indiana University alumnus who founded a technology company has donated $60 million to IU for the creation of an artificial intelligence center. ServiceNow founder Fred Luddy made the donation, which is the second-largest private gift IU has ever received. ServiceNow is a cloud computing company based in Santa Clara, California. IU says Luddy's $60 million donation will finance the creation of an artificial intelligence initiative focused on digital health. It will be based in what's now known as the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, but will be renamed the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering.

GSA Offers More Details on Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence
The General Services Administration is making artificial intelligence the sixth pillar of its Centers of Excellence program, and agency leaders are already teasing a few of their potential areas of focus. The new AI center will be rooted in GSA's work with the Pentagon's Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, which last month became the fifth government organization to participate in the CoE initiative. After helping the JAIC accelerate its development of AI technologies and increase the Pentagon's adoption of those tools, GSA officials see the opportunity to reapply that work to help the rest of the government reap the benefits of the emerging tech. "We can learn from [the JAIC partnership] … and frankly, we can reuse all that foundation for our existing agencies and agencies outside the Department of Defense," Anil Cheriyan, head of GSA's Technology Transformation Service, said Tuesday during the agency's IT Modernization Showcase. "The need for artificial intelligence is growing and significant across federal government."
Congress can bring the government into the age of artificial intelligence
The reintroduction of the Artificial Intelligence in Government Act this month is a much needed response to concerns that the United States is lagging behind both foreign governments and American industry in reaping the promise and perils of artificial intelligence. Sponsored by a bipartisan group of senators, the bill promotes the adoption of artificial intelligence in the federal government, while addressing the potential negative consequences. A companion bill was introduced in the House. Central to the bill is the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence within the General Services Administration, which will provide the technical expertise, research, and advice to federal agencies on the acquisition and use of artificial intelligence technology, including all of the accompanying "economic, policy, legal, and ethical challenges and implications." A key part of its mission is to direct and assist the agencies in developing and maintaining governance plans for their use of artificial intelligence.
